Specific strains were found that could encrypt files and lock devices. In fact, in 2022 Zimperium detected 17,000 unique ransomware samples that targeted mobile devices.
It is important to recognize that ransomware functions differently on mobile devices. Android and Apple iOS devices have sandboxing and permission models that are different than laptops.
